Slavery was illegal in all northern states, but it continue to exist in the south for another 60 years. In 18 65, president lincoln signed the emancipation proclamation, freeing all american slaves. As a young child, douglas washington had been told that teaching a slave to read was the surest way to unfit him for slavery. Throughout his life, he used that tool to work toward and finally achieve his greatest mission, destroying slavery.
