I disagree with that. I think they are complex characters, but they're not acting as real people in a way. They're expressing something complex about human beings in a way that isn't naturalistic. Meryl Streep, I can't picture her playing absurdity. And David Lynch teeters on absurdity in the Good Way and the Kafka escape absurdity way.
