African-American students were asked to write an essay for a competition. When they finished, their essays would be evaluated by Edward Caldwell III. Those with a fixed mindset viewed it as a threat, an insult, or an attack. The students with the growth mindset may also have viewed him as a dinosaur but he could teach them something.
