The benefits of elite status are free checked bags, extra legroom seating access to business class lounges or first class lounge. The 100,000 point bonus is not like wildly exciting to me either because the aviator red card frequently has a bonus of 60 or 70,000 miles after first purchase. If you're serious about chasing American Airlines elite status and don't mind paying a bit to get further along in it this can help with that as well.
