Robert Graves and Laura Riding's Pushback of Anthologies

Coleridge and Shelley were worried about the proliferation of volumes of extracts or beauties as they were known at the time. These are books perceived to be bringing literature, this great British common good, down to the level of the lowest cultural denominator. That is a problem for people who think that culture should be made and consumed by elites. And you can hear this sniffiness for sure in writing and Graves, who generally are quite mean critics.
