Acts 22-28: Paul’s Final Journey

Unshaken Saints

CHAPTER

Thestis's Appeal to Caesar

"I am sick and tired of waiting here for a Roman governor to have the guts to do what's right," Paul says. "As a Roman citizen, I have the right to do just that." In our day, it'd be more like appealing to the Supreme Court,. Because if something is being held up in some kind of local jurisdiction, then we got to get out of the local and get onto the highest court in the land.

But if there be none of those things where of these accuse me, no man may deliver me unto them. And then the words that change everything. I appeal unto Caesar. Forget the whole thing. I am sick and tired of waiting here for a Roman governor to have the guts to do what's right. So forget the whole thing? No, I'm not going back to Jerusalem. They've already passed judgment and have tried to kill me repeatedly. And I'm not dying in Jerusalem. The Lord himself told me that. I'm going to Rome. And since you don't seem to be sending me there, then I'm taking matters into my own hands. And I appeal unto Caesar. As a Roman citizen, I have the right to do just that. If you've seen Pirates of the Caribbean, the first one, when they use the word parlay, and it's part of the Pirates code that if you just say the word, it's the word speak in French, if you call for a parlay, they have to let you speak. And you are guaranteed safe passage to the captain so you can explain yourself. That's basically what Paul just did. Parlay, I appeal unto Caesar. In our day, it'd be more like appealing to the Supreme Court. Because if something is being held up in some kind of local jurisdiction, then we got to get out of the local and get onto the highest court in the land. I appeal to Caesar. Get me there. I thought that was happening two years ago. I had set my face steadfastly to go to Rome, come what may, and by appealing to the Roman Centurion and the Roman chief captain, by coming down to Caesarea with the military escort, by speaking with Felix, I thought I'd be heading to Rome years ago. But I'm not paying my way. I'm certainly not going to bribe someone here to get me there. No, I deserve to be sent there at Roman expense as a Roman citizen myself. So send me, Thestis. I'm tired of festering here. So verse 12, then Thestis, when he had conferred with the council, answered, Hasta'w appealed unto Caesar. It's like, wait, wait, wait. Did you just say parlay? Fine. Unto Caesar, shout thou go.
