The Louvre bought the tiara in 1897 for $1.5 million and it was immediately accused of being a fake. A French journalist called Le Matat published an article saying that no one questioned its authenticity when it was on display. The story spread around the world, with even small towns debating whether or not to believe them. After more than six years they were finally able to find out what had happened before their eyes.
