The houston family history illuminates a part of black history that often gets lost, and that is the history of black prosperity. Wywi's relatives were exemplars of this legacy. They gathered in black fraternities and serarities, at catilians bridge parties. Their relative privilege didn't end the reality of racism or the potential for violence. In the wake of the expansion of rights during reconstruction, there was a brutal back lash.
