Our society's emphasis on linear growth and achievements alienates us from the sicret pattern of death and rebirth. Primitive societies were close enough to the natural cycles of their lives to provide containers through which the members of the tribe could experience death and rebirth, he says. In such societies, every change in a person's life involves actions and reactions between sacred and profane actions that must be regulated so as not to hurt others.
