The Word Bad Is a Lazy Word
Bad could mean so many things. I think you can minimize the offence by about ten %. Bad coud mean that the variables are named poorly, that they don't make they don't match what they actually are used for. It could mean that there's lots of coupling in the system that has negative effects when you try to change seemingly unrelated parts of the system and cause breakage. But if you really want to point out how something is bad, tell them why it's bad and exactly how it's bad,. And then it still probably won't help.
