Puden describes ukraine as inseparable from russia in much the same way that france described algeria in the 19 fifties. The people in the former soviet empire clearly wanted a political, military, economic and cultural association with the west, and they were willing to do what it took to get it. This resistance from the ground is the key piece of the narrative that we sometimes neglect.
