The John Birch Society was at the apex of its power and influence in 1964. It was still widely reviled by most mainstream Democrats and Republicans, as well as basically all of the media. Bob Welch estimated there are about 300 to 500,000 actual communists in the U.S., plus another million dupes, allies and sympathizers.
