The Limitations of Pathogen Activation in Blood Banking

Jeff Smith: We're talking today about pathogen activation. But before we get to the details of that, I think it helps us to really set the stage. So why don't you start by describing maybe how we have done with reducing the incidence of transfusion transmitted infections? He says there are several different approaches that have been used to be so successful and they include laboratory testing of donors as well as use of volunteer donors. The approach that we're talking about is treating the blood product in order to inactivate any remaining infectious agents.
