When was the first time a computer did something that surprised you? It's probably experiments with what you might call artificial evolution or they call it evolutionary algorithms. I started getting interested in those in grad school and it was at the University of Texas at Austin. You're basically doing breeding on artificial brains that are controlling things, like characters in some video games.
