Get Wind of Something

The expression to get wind has been used in this form since the first half of the 1800s. It is an allusion to the fact that animals become aware of predators and prey by sensing a scent on the wind. So downwind, the wind is blowing from someone or something towards you. Upwind is when the wind is blows from you towards something or someone else. If you're downwind, you can smell whatever's upwind.
