The writer and his wife moved to Paris when their son luke was born in 19 94. They were inspired by the story of frank o'connor, who grew up as a poor irish kittin cork. When they came to a wall that was too high to scale, all the little irish boys threw their caps over the wall,. because once your cap was on the other side of the wall, you had no choice but to find a way over. You couldn't go home without your cap. And i've alway thought, that's a lovely image of the key moments we have in life. I knew it would be a more interesting place to write about than
