CHAPTER

Contributing to the Open-Source Community and Maintaining Communities

This chapter explores the significance of supporting open-source communities and highlights three ways in which companies can contribute, including financial support, developer assistance, and conference sponsorship. It also mentions LinkedIn as the optimal way to contact Todd Barr, one of the speakers.

So that question was not in any way designed or a way of putting you on the spot. But I think it's worth bringing up this topic because it's one thing to use the software. It's another thing to give back to the community and we need to maintain these communities, you know, if we're going to if we're going to continue to derive benefit from this, so a couple of questions here just around off the conversation. What is one obvious way you think other companies that are using large amounts of the software phosphor G? What's one way they could do today tomorrow to help give something back? And then perhaps what would the perfect longer term plan be for some of these companies to help maintain these communities, which they depend really heavily on?
Speaker 1
I say threefold. One would be financially because the phosphor G technology always is based on community and volunteers for the most part. So if they can start paying to get applications that are paying for features to get done as a company should be should support the community financially. Second, low net developers for a week or two, right? You can always it's just that's basically just a sprint is not it. It shouldn't put you that far behind on the other stuff and it really helps the community up is having more hands on the product. And third would be to sponsor conferences and sponsor, you know, get the word out there more and like talk about what you're actually using as you're back in stack saying, hey, you know, we're price water house coopers and our geospatial applications are our postgres and post GIS and have that conversation out there and supporting the community through interaction and thought leadership
Speaker 2
as well. Thank you, Todd. I really enjoy this conversation, but I always enjoy a conversation. It's been a pleasure having you back on the podcast. Where can people reach out to you anywhere if they want to catch up with you? If they want to connect with you, if they want to continue this conversation?
Speaker 1
The best place to find me these days is LinkedIn ever since Twitter kind of imploded I've been hit or miss on there and I really haven't found another microblogging platform that I'm in love with yet, you know, threads is fine. Mass sounds great as fumes. It seems still removed from the from the aspect of community we had on Twitter or X, you know, like just like six months ago. So really just finding me on LinkedIn is the best thing. I know they're my name, Todd Barr. Yeah, it's pretty obvious who I am on there. I have a lot of geospatial like pictures on my page. LinkedIn is really the best place to reach out for me these days.
Speaker 2
Thanks again, Todd. Really enjoyed talking with you. I'll put a link to your LinkedIn profile in the show. It's and hopefully people can connect with you there. Well, thank you very much for listening all the way to the end. I really appreciate it. And I really hope you enjoyed that episode with Todd. But the like Todd mentioned, the best place to catch up with him is currently LinkedIn. And if you want to check out their previous episode, there'll be a link to that in the show notes of the episode that you've just listened to. So thank you very much for tuning in. I'll be back again soon. I hope that you'll take the time to join me then.
