This week we're discussing the future of technology and asking what place humanity will have within it. Experts predict that millions, millions of jobs could be taken over by a computer or a robot in the next 20 years. Could this lead to mass unemployment, greater inequalities, even social unrest? Or should we look forward to the day when computers or robots can match or even perform humans? So our motion to day is be afraid. Be very afraid. The robots are coming, and they will destroy our livelihoods. We have a great panel arguing for and against the motion. And then i will throw the debate open to the audience.
Technology might move fast but the fears surrounding it remain ever-present. Back in 2015 Intelligence Squared gathered both tech evangelists and technology naysayers to debate how robots and AI might swallow up jobs in years to come. The speakers included economist, commentator and author George Magnus, internet entrepreneur and author Andrew Keen, technology entrepreneur, presidential advisor and economist Dr Pippa Malmgren, and author and journalist Walter Isaacson. Chairing the debate was journalist and broadcaster Zeinab Badawi.
