With Kepler, you couldn't actually visualize the planet. JWST is able to do direct imaging with basically a technology that sort of blew the rocks out the light of the star so that you can see the dimmer stuff around it. We're talking about things like water vapor and carbon dioxide and methane,. Those kind of chemicals could potentially point to a habitable surface.
