The PET scanner is not an anatomic image, like an MRI or a CT scan. It's just looking for glucose uptake in the brain. Hypometabolism shows up as less signal in that area. Less glucose correlates to neurodegeneration in that part of the brain. But it doesn't tell you what the underlying protein deposition is and if there's underlying protein deposition.
