The War of Independence in the Netherlands

In the seventeenth century, France was heavily attacked and ravaged by catholic states who wanted to suppress another potential protestant enemy. So if you were going to mobilize large armies to engage in this sort of huge, consuming regional war, you had to be able to feed them. And hence, certain areas like alsace in the holy roman empire, nd in what's now france, became a predominantly protestant region at that time. The dutch protestant states general launched a war of independence against spain in the 15 sixties which led to massacres on both sides.
