CHAPTER

The First Secretary of the Smithsonian, Joseph Henry

Pam Henson is the Institutional Historian for Smithsonian Libraries and Archives. She's worked here for nearly 50 years, which may sound like a long time by bismasonian standards. But she says people come here and they don't go away. Sometimes even beyond the grave. The first Secretary of the Smithsonian, Joseph Henry, died in the Smithsonian Castle in 1878. A Washington Post article from 1900 reported that an old watchman repeatedly said he had met Professor Henry 'walking quietly about' at night.
