Is There a Cultural Payoff to Being Silent?

I remember reading your column in the New York Times for a long time, which was focused on consumerism. So why the shift from kind of that particular focused consumerism to this other focus? I'm curious. There's not a lot of cultural payoff to being silent, but this is a great sentence so true.
