The Darwinian Understanding of Variation and Selection
Darwin is a pretty decisive blow against that teleological view of evolution. A lot gets hidden in a word over time I think so Wittgenstein makes this point in the 20th century it's certainly in Nietzsche and Schopenhauer. If you deeply want to understand a word you can't actually do so just by its current usage which doesn't give you insight into what the original meaning of the word is.
