There were no real big empires at the time. In many of the places, they didn't even seem to have a written language. It was largely oral tradition that kept the history of the island. But it would change because among all the different tribes and kingdoms that were fighting for power, there was one kingdom known as the Marina Kingdom or the Imarina Kingdom. And under this ruler, which I'm just going to call Adrian on them, because his full name, I will mispronounce every single time I try to say it.
In 1828, after the death of her husband, Queen Ranavalona I. came into power by killing all other potential regents (wives, sons, mothers). At that time, she was between 30 and 40 years old. Ranavalona I. went down in history rather ingloriously and bears the surname “the cruel”. Many Malagasy call her regency tany maizina, in English “years of darkness”.
