The Rise of Linguistic Prescriptivism in the Victorian Period

The first heyday of linguistic prescriptivism was back in the 18th century. It really has a resurgence, especially in the second half of the 19th century. There's this whole slew of books by grammarians and others who were trying to fix and prescribe what the English language should be. And as you say crucially, it's not just about correct English or standard English for the Victorians, but it's about pure English as well.
