Parallel Processing in the Auditory Cortex
Primary auditory cortex is thought to be the first way station before speech. If you interrupted it, then people will have problems understanding speech. But when researchers stimulated a sub region of the superior temporal gyrus, they saw the opposite. Patients could not understand speech, but could still apparently hear sounds normally. One subject described it as being able to hear you speaking, but not being able to make out the words.
