On New Year's Day 1995, a monster wave struck the Dropner Natural Gas Platform. Just nine months into its life, it had just encountered one 20 feet higher than that. Since the New Year's wave, there have been dozens of sightings of rogue waves. This alone indicates that they are far more common than anyone had imagined prior to 1995.
