Is Criticism a Meaningful Activity?

I want for my own reasons to believe that criticism is a meaningful activity. I feel like if I'm displaying as a kind of paradigm criticism about things that the students recognize as important outside English departments, then I'm kind of doing my job. It's not obvious to everybody, certainly to undergraduates and maybe also to graduate students, why criticism should be considered ameaning activity. So you know, I've been interested in what, you know, gets called cosmopolitanism for a long time, partly because it's about stretching democracy so that there's considerations of justice, matter outside the borders of our own country.
