The Role of the Motor Cortex in Movement

The human is the only animal where the motor cortex has usurped the control over skeletal muscle. Most other animals, their skeletal muscle is controlled almost completely by their basal ganglia. We have cortical control over our muscles to a much greater degree than any other animal. It's largely because it's not going to be as reactive and judgmental as human intelligence.
