Napoleon's Capitulation of the Senate

Napoleon wanted to be first consul for life, but the legislature was resistant. The senate rejected the idea of lifetime tenure and instead voted to extend napoleon's term of office another ten years. In his own speech Napoleon claimed he was now equivalent to the monarchs of europe. France had probably just signed up for two more decades of bonapartism.
