Leland Stanford wanted to prove his theory about horses' hooves leaving the ground. Moibridge helped develop a chemical for film that was far more light-sensitive. Using this setup, Moibridge managed to snap 12 pictures in less than a second. The trial's outcome might strike us as bizarre today. All 12 men agreed that they would have done the same thing.
