When I was younger and I saw that statue, I was immediately drawn to it. But I didn't really know why. And having read more about it and more about art generally of that period, my experience of it is so much more immersive and stirring than before. There's a kind of broad cultural discernment there that comes from a healthy culture. If we could cultivate that kind of thing again, it couldn't happen now, could it? You can't imagine.
