The First Public Meeting Between Washington and Beijing
Washington and Beijing did not have direct relations, so they communicated quietly through third countries. Mao Zedong invited the American table tennis team to Beijing in April of 1971. On February 21st, 1972, Nixon s plane touched down on the airport tarmac in Beijing. The Soviets had been asking about likely reactions to the possibility of launching strikes against their southern neighbor.
