literacy rates didn't really begin massively improving until the printing press was invented. It's like, because books were so time intensive to make, they couldn't be distributed in a very wide fashion until there was some kind of automation that enabled book making to become much easier and less labor intensive. The more just kind of excess wealth we have around, the more we can put it into things that don't have an immediate payoff, but maybe have a long term pay off, like research or education.
