The Vichy government adopts this whole thing completely pointless well of course but what it is is a way of having prestige within the Vichy state. The battle isn't as rosy as has been made out and the people that have made that out to be a sort of successful french army face-saving confrontation between the french and the germans are our Vichy propaganda writers.
