The mississippian culture is a culture considered to exist in north america directly before and during the arrival of the first european explorers from the sixteenth century. It became obvious to colonial settlers that centuries old civilizations had occupied the great expanses of land in north America. This brought with it a desire to lazily label native americans as a backward society whose lands were simply fair game until more modern historians began to understand these cultures.
