Marlow's first port of call is the company's station on the Congo River. He witnesses six African men chained together at the neck, balancing baskets of earth on their heads. These enslaved men were referred to as criminals and refer force to work for the company. And if that wasn't disturbing enough, he then witnesses dying African men lying against a tree.
