Aristotle's Four Causes

Aristotle says there are four kinds of explanations that you can offer of a phenomenon. One is to explain something by reference to its origins, which he calls the efficient cause. He also gives us the materials with which to understand poetry in these terms. Aristotle has a very brief story about how poetry in general originated and more detailed stories about how the different genres originated.
