A lot of play was made of the way in which Ursula van der Leyen addressed him as dear Rishi. But whether or not that indicates a real warmth of friendship and affection is open to debate. The relationship with his predecessors, particularly Boris Johnson, but also Theresa May,. I mean, there was never any real warmth there. And that lack of personal warmth was always an obstacle in the negotiation.
