86 - Cameron Ellis: Using fMRI to study what it is like to be an infant

Are There Any Hypotheses About Memory in Animal Models?
Research on animal models in particular mice and rat models has looked at the memory system in particular the hippocampus. One account is that there's kind of like a wholesale turnover of the neurons in the part of the hippocampus that basically erases the kinds of memories that were there beforehand. Another account suggests that the system that is allowing the storage of these memories long term isn't in place in infancy, only emerges in its full sophistication towards like a few years after birth. The mapping between animal models and human models is very difficult at this point.
