The nature of God's arrival isn't one of glory and power, but one of humility being born in a manger. In John 13, the verbs that are used there, he takes off his outer garment and lays it down then at the end of the washing, foot washing, he takes it up again. This is Jesus saying, I'm going to lay down my flesh and take it back up again. If you want to know God, don't look for the glorious things. Look to the cross. That's where God showing up has been very offensive to us.
