Who knew Star Trek spoke to the heart of American race relations?

The book 'Star Trek in the City of Dreams' explores the way the show reflected and influenced contemporary American society, for example by portraying the Earth as a global peacekeeping body, or by showing characters who emerged from war-ravaged empires. While the text argues that the Star Trek TV show at first focused more on the Cold War, it adapted equally well to the needs of the 'War on Drugs' generation which descended more in color and environmental disputes. Star Trek only rebooted itself, says the book, reaching uninhibited social acclaim that was initially skewed by masterpiece moments about racism, environmentalism, and the human struggle against technocracy.
