The medical accelerator industry has become a little complacent about safety. We've assumed that manufacturers have all kinds of safety design experience since they've been in the business a long time. And except for a few instances in the 1960s, each year, Hammersmith, Hamburg, the use of medical accelerators have been remarkably free of serious radiation in accidents until now. Perhaps they've been spoiled by this success. It often takes an accident to alert people to the dangers of involvement in technology.
