The War Against Chinese Restaurants
Jack Chin is a law scholar at UC Davis and he wrote a paper called The War Against Chinese Restaurants. It highlights the largely unknown effort to get rid of Chinese restaurants at the turn of the century. Some would have lurid displays, they would have casts of people who would act out stereotypical Chinese vices so you would see people smoking opium. Another kind of thing that went on in Chinese restaurants was a sort of freedom, a escape from the restraint of conventional society.
