Michelangelo's father agreed to let him apprentice at the age of 13 with the Florentine painter, Girledio. There Michelangelo learned the fresco technique that he would later use on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. In a letter to a friend, Michelangelo wrote, the more painting resembles sculpture, the more I like it. Sculpture is the torch by which painting is illuminated, and the difference between them is the difference between the sun and the moon.
