The Story of the Ophilius Broom of the Woodlows

Ophilius Broom was an active royalist during the English Civil War. On his deathbed in 1670, he asked that his head should be removed before burial. This would prevent any lingering royalists from finding a head to mount as a trophy. The sexton broke his spade trying to dig for broom's skull twenty years ago. A manuscript dates back to 1829 and contains statements from various parishioners confirming the traditions of its supernatural history. Farmer Priddle Flukes remembered when the skull was brought downstairs and put in a cupboard. He said: 'Uncle, let’s go and bury it when we have had some crust of bread and cheese'
