Is There a Trade-Off?
In my previous company, we were trying to understand diffusion of influence and diffusion of ideas across social networks. There's so many insights in that. And i want to resonate with the challenge the facebook engineers faced. I think yes and no. An modeller could very easily foresee that making recommendations based on friends of friends would end up with a more highly clustered, more homophalous network. That part is easier to see. The knock on effects of that in society is much more convoluted and, ah, much more difficult to see. But in actuality, we have been introduced to that hard, cold reality by what we're seeing in the world to day.
