The Impact of COVID-19 on South African Youth Employment

South Africa had one of the most stringent lockdowns in the world and definitely on the continent. Our research showed that those that were hardest hit were youth and hardest hit were black African women. A big push has been this short term employment stimulus program where for example, the Department of Basic Education created half a million pathways for young people through teacher assistant programs at about 26,000 schools.
