I Was Never Cut Out to Be an Academic
I never really thought I was cut out to be an academic. But I had taught some classes when I was working at Los Alamos and had people encouraging me to take up teaching. Then I took a detour and did the thing that I said I was never going to do. When I went back to graduate school, I said I will never be a tenure track assistant professor or live in the state of Florida. And so I got involved with genetic algorithms applied to the human genome project while I was working outside the fence. That's why I got my first paper published much earlier in my career than normal because I started working on this thing.
